Denzel Washington, full name Denzel Hayes Washington Jr., was born on December 28, 1954, in Mount Vernon, New York, in the United States. People consider him as an actor who reconfigured “the concept of classic movie stardom.”

Speaking of his identity, Denzel’s father’s name was Denzel Hayes Washington Sr. And his mother’s name was Lennis. His father was an ordained Pentecostal minister in Buckimhum County, Virginia. And, his mother worked as a beauty parlour owner and operator as well.

Denzel Washington Childhood and Education

In his educational life, Denzel studied at Pennington-Grimes Elementary School in Mount Vernon until 1968. His parents divorced when he was 14. After the divorce, her mother sent him to Oakland Military Academy school in New Windsor, New York. He went there to learn discipline.

After completing the preparatory, he attended Mainland High School in Daytona Beach, Florida. We knew that he wanted to go to Texas Tech University. In 1977, He earned a B.A. in Drama and Journalism from Fordham University.

After finishing that, Washington enrolled at the Lincoln Center campus to study acting. He spent a year there. After finishing his studies, he pursued his career in acting.

Early Career

After graduating, Washington joined the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco. After some stage performance, he debuted in his first Hollywood comedy film ‘Carbon Copy’ in 1981. 

His major career break came after his acting in NBC’s television hospital drama ‘St. Elsewhere‘. This drama was broadcast from 1982 to 1988. He got his first Academy nomination for the best supporting actor in the movie named ‘Cry Freedom (1987)’. 

After winning the academy nomination, he performed in various movies, tv-series and stage dramas. In 1989, he starred in the American Civil War film ‘Glory (1989)‘. He received the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for this movie. Washington’s acting skill and his popular appeal as a leading man had firmly established in the 1990s. 

After acting in numerous films, he starred in various movies like Mississippi Masala (1991). Again he starred in Much Ado About Nothing (1993), Philadelphia, and Devil in a Blue Dress (1995). In 1995, he starred in the military thriller Crimson Tide and many more.

People appreciated his acting in Malcolm X in 1992. He gave a powerful performance and achieved an Academy Award nomination for best actor. Afterwards, he received another nomination for best actor for the film The Hurricane.

Mid Career

In the middle of his career, he became the second Afro-American actor to win an Oscar for best actor for the movie ‘Training Day‘ in 2001.

He directed and acted in his first film Antwone Fisher in the same year. After completing that with huge success, Washington re-teamed with Lee. They starred in the crime drama Inside Man (2006). Next, he appeared in American Gangster in 2007. Following, in 2009, he acted in another movie named ‘The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3′.

Then, Washington starred in the post-apocalyptic drama ‘The Book of Eli’ and Unstoppable in 2010. In 2012, he got nominated for best acting in ‘Flight.’ After acting in Flight, he appeared in an action thriller named ‘The Equalizer in 2014.’ Also, he appeared in Magnificent Seven (2014). This was a remake of the 1960 classic Western.

In 2017, Denzel received his eighth nomination in the Oscar for his other fine acting in ‘Roman J. Israel, Esq.’ In 2018, he again acted as Robert MacCall in ‘The Equalizer 2‘. 

At present, Denzel played a detective hunting a serial killer in ‘The Little Things‘ in 2021.

Apart from his professional life, Washington married actress Pauletta Washington in 1983. After their marriage, it has been 36 years. And, their marriage is considered one of the most successful marriages in Hollywood. 

Denzel first met her on the set of his first T.V. role in Wilma in 1977.
